Mosaics at Lod, Israel

This post is a little outside the main focus of this blog - Jesus and his life and times - but we can't resist but to report on the discovery of several exquisitely preserved mosaics from the third century AD, in the Israeli city of Lod, near Tel-Aviv.

Lod is ancient Lydda, which was destroyed by the Romans in 66 AD during the Jewish War, 33 years after the death of Jesus.

The first mosaics were excavated 20 years ago. They were accidentally uncovered during the construction of a highway.

Last November, another great mosaic was discovered, also in excellent condition.
