The Ascension of Jesus

The New Testament book Acts of the Apostles tells us that, after his resurrection, Jesus appeared to his apostles over a period of forty days. After that, he is said to have ascended into heaven before their very eyes. That was the last time his apostles saw him.
For such a momentous event in the lives of Jesus and his followers, the gospel writers tell us precious little about Jesus' ascension.
We need to go to Acts to find a few sentences that recount what happened.
And, as is so often the case with the descriptions of events in Jesus' life, the writer uses plain language and the narrative is concise and unvarnished, almost mundane:
“... he was taken up before their very eyes and a cloud hid him from their sight.
They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky?”
